The National Park Management Plan is the single most important document for the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is, in effect, a five year work programme for a whole range of organisations operating across the area.
The new Yorkshire Dales National Park Management Plan 2019-24 contains 50 measurable objectives to pursue by 2024.
It is ambitious in its pursuit of a long-term vision for the National Park. Some of the issues it contains are locally critical, such as the future of upland farming after Brexit, connection to superfast broadband, and measures to tackle illegal persecution of birds of prey.
It is the first Management Plan to cover the new western extension area, supporting projects such as the £3.5 million Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Delivery of National Park purposes cannot be achieved without strong, self-reliant communities.A drift away from the area by young people is no longer balanced by new households moving in - causing a shortage of workers and putting community services under threat.
The Management Plan's response is for local councils and other bodies to work jointly on a range of measures to retain and attract younger working-age people into the area. This includes ambitious targets for new, more affordable housing and developing new services, such as high speed broadband.
Who wrote it?
Prepared over the last 18 months by a partnership of 16 public, private and voluntary sector bodies, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Management Plan 2019-24 has been shaped by two rounds of public consultation and Government policy.
Over 100 organisations will be directly involved in delivering its objectives.
