The northern Dales have a wilder, more remote feel to them than the rest of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The hill tops are dominated by heather moorlands that light up purple at the end of the summer. The valleys have intricate patterns of drystone walls surrounding traditional hay meadows dotted with stone field barns. In the more remote parts, the scars and ruins left by the once thriving lead mining industry can be spotted.
