Coverdale is a side valley of Wensleydale. Starting close to East Witton it runs in a south-westerly direction with its major settlement being Carlton-in-Coverdale. Beyond Carlton a narrow singletrack road ascends the valley, eventually climbing over Park Rash from where it descends steeply to Kettlewell.
Abbeys and attractions
This is a beautiful quiet valley but also contains the unusual and very popular attraction - the Forbidden Corner. This is close to Coverham which is also the site of a ruined abbey.
Carlton has a number of places to stay plus the community-run pub the Foresters Arms. Further up the valley is the Thwaite Arms at Horsehouse.
A gory past
The long valley sides climb slowly up to Buckden Pike and Great Whernside with a number of moorland crossings in between, including that of Deadman's Hill - so called because of the discovery of the headless corpses of three Scottish pedlars in 1728.
