The Strid is a famous spot on the River Wharfe close to Bolton Abbey where the river is forced through a narrow gap in the rocks. A visit to The Strid forms part of many peoples' days out at the lovely Bolton Abbey estate which also has the abbey ruins, large picnic areas and cafes.
A gentle stroll through Strid Wood from the Cavendish Pavilion brings you eventually to the fearsome sight of the Strid. This is a pinch point in the river where the rocks on either side are almost close enough to 'stride' across. Don't be tempted though, the rocks are slippy and the water is deep and fast flowing with hidden crevices. In medieval times the 'Boy of Egremont' was pulled in by his dog and supposedly drowned, although the records tell a different story - he was signing estate documents well into adulthood.
