How long have you been a volunteer?
Since 2004.
Why did you want to become a volunteer?
Having moved to the Dales on my retirement, volunteering seemed a good way to learn about the culture and traditions of my new environment and to meet people and become part of the local community.
What do you do as a volunteer?
I work at the Dales Countryside Museum, helping to collate information on the collections.
What do you enjoy about being a volunteer?
Being part of the team at the Museum and being able to use my professional background in a new way. The work that I do has enabled me to learn so much more about the history of the Dales, in a hands-on way, than could be gained from just reading books.
What’s been your greatest achievement as a volunteer?
Long-term commitment! After working on the database of collections for several years, I am now able to help with enquiries from visitors about objects and suggest links between photographs and objects.
Where is your favourite place in the Yorkshire Dales National Park?
Langstrothdale – such a beautiful dale and the perfect place for a picnic.
