DCM Volunteer, Martin Garside

How long have you been a volunteer?

I have volunteered for nearly two years since I moved to the Dales.

Why did you want to become a volunteer?

As I was retired I had the time and wanted to contribute to the community in a way that my skills and experience would help. It was also a good way of getting to know people.

What do you do as a volunteer?

As a volunteer for DCM I do research at the Museum. I also do other volunteering including:

  • seeing people and taking calls at the Citizens Advice Bureau
  • being a school governor and volunteer at Askrigg School
  • driving the Little White Bus

I also get involved in other activities in Askrigg, including currently helping with others to prepare a new book about life in the Parish to update similar books that were published in 1965, 1977 and 1990.

What do you enjoy about being a volunteer?

I enyoy meeting people and being useful.

What’s been your greatest achievement as a volunteer?

Hopefully helping to give a good service.

Where is your favourite place in the Yorkshire Dales National Park?

This is difficult, but Mill Gill is my nearest favourite place.
