There are many ancient walled lanes scattered around the Dales. Some of these became modern roads but many are still used as farm access and public rights of way. At Lunds, in the parish of Dent, an old walled lane winds its way between the fields, leading from the farm to the fell. The lane acts as an access route to several bridleways and footpaths around Dent and Sedbergh. The collapse of the wall had led to neglect of the condition of the lane making it difficult to pass owing to the collapsed stone and overgrowing shrubs and branches. Working with the Dales Volunteers North West Walling Team there has been re-walling the eastern boundary over a 2 year period. The walling has had an immediate beneficial result by making the route clear and open to use while at the same time restoring this historical feature.
