It is a fairly common occurrence for trees that are perched on the tops of river banks to eventually get undermined by erosion from the river, and get washed away. Unfortunately, when this occurred just east of Middleton Bridge near Sedbergh, a footpath also ran along the top of the bank. When the tree fell down, it pulled away enough of the 30ft high riverbank to make a stile on the footpath perilously close to the edge of the bank. The Area Ranger negotiated with the farmer, who allowed the footpath to be moved further back into his field. The Access Ranger then constructed new stiles and gates and erected a new fence, which means the public can now continue to use the footpath safely away from the edge of the riverbank.
