Description
Coppicing is a traditional form of woodland management. A coppiced wood is cut periodically and the trees allowed to regrow from the cut stumps (stools).
The rotation coppice system at Freeholders Wood, near Aysgarth Falls, is vital in order to create a rich mosaic of habitats and maintain the wide range of flora and fauna present.
Under the guidance of Paul Sheehan, Access Ranger for Lower Wensleydale, volunteers will get the opportunity to coppice the hazel trees and have a bonfire! The work involves using hand-tools, has a low level of difficulty and requires a medium level of fitness (moving the cut timber is a manual job and can be physically tiring).
It is a great chance to get outside and make a real difference!

This activity needs to be carried out between November and March, and a day can be arranged to suit your group.

We will provide safety boots, gloves, tools and full supervision for the day. Individuals will require old outdoor clothing, as when working near bonfires there is a chance they will get holes in them! The time of year means that the weather could be cold, wet and windy for part of the day. But that doesn’t stop the fun!
Parking is available at Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre.
Costs
We ask companies to make a donation to the National Park for our corporate volunteering opportunities. Revenue we raise from our Corporate Days helps us continue to look after the Yorkshire Dales National Park. For a group size of 10 we suggest a donation of £500.
